FREE 2-hour writing workshop with poet and memoirist Juliet Patterson
Every family has stories—stories that are told again and again, stories that have been forgotten, and stories that may never have been told at all. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how to turn memories, family stories, photographs, places, objects, and fragments of the past into compelling personal writing.
We’ll consider what makes a family story meaningful beyond the facts of what happened, and we’ll experiment with ways of writing about memory, place, relationships, inheritance, and change. Through a series of short writing exercises and guided prompts, participants will generate material and begin shaping a story of their own.
No previous writing experience is necessary. You do not need to have a memoir already in progress—or even know what story you want to tell. Come with a notebook, a few memories, and a willingness to be curious about what you remember and what you may have inherited from those who came before you.
